It’s that time again – Patch 6.2 brings another new tier to FFXIV and that means new raids, new gear, and of course new tomestones. But what happens to your old tomestones? Luckily the process is simple and predictable, so I’ll explain it all below.
The Tomestone Cycle
The way currencies work in FFXIV is that at any given point there are two endgame tomestones. Both tomestones can be collected with max level (90) jobs, but one has a weekly cap (450/week) while the other may be farmed indefinitely.
With every even numbered patch comes a new capped tomestone (Causality in 6.2), at which point the previous capped tomestone (Astronomy) becomes uncapped. The previously uncapped tomestone (Aphorism) is phased out and is no longer used to purchase things from vendors.
Note that if you’re looking for the Moonward equipment set that was previously purchased with tomestones of Aphorism, those pieces can now be bought with sacks of nuts from the <Guildship Hunt Vendor> NPCs. Either J’lakshai in Old Sharlayan [12, 13.3] or Wilmetta in Radz-at-Han [10.5, 7.5] will have them.
Where to Exchange Tomestones of Aphorism
If you have any unused tomestones of Aphorism you can exchange them for tomestones of Astronomy at a rate of 4:1. Head to Mor Dhona and speak to Auriana <Servant of Splendors> at [22.7, 6.7] and select ‘Allagan Tomestones of Aphorism Exchange’.
Since you can only hold 2,000 tomestones of each type, extra keen players will max out their Aphorism before the patch hits for an immediate bonus 500 Astronomy to cash in for crafting materials.
I Have Tomestones of Astronomy, Now What?
Astronomy is used to purchase the latest crafting materials which are worth a lot of gil, especially near the start of the patch as players craft combat equipment to gear up for the new tier of savage raids.
You can buy the materials in Radz-at-Han from Cihanti <Tomestone Exchange> at [10.8, 10.4] under ‘Allagan Tomestones of Astronomy (Other)’. You’re looking for the newest tier of crafting materials which is the more expensive set (20 each) at the top of the list.
You can either sell the materials themselves on the marketboard, or if you’ve got your crafters geared up you can craft the combat gear and use or sell that. Either way they could make you some dough so be sure to spend them!
